FROM THE PREACHER’S DESK
THE GOSPEL MEETING I held for the church in Nederland, Texas was a
most enjoyable experience. The elders there asked me to preach sermons
that would edify the church and help “get them off high center.” Like many
other congregations they had not had a meeting in a long time and were not
sure what to expect. As it turned out the congregation supported the
meeting very well and the attendance was quite good. Several folks came
from surrounding congregations and encouraged us with their presence.
There was a social time after the service each evening which enabled me
to get to know many of the members better. There were no public
responses to the invitation, but the elders said the meeting accomplished
what they had hoped it would. Thanks to brother Don R. Bentley for
teaching my class and preaching in my absence. I heard some good things
about his lessons.
LAST SUNDAY was tough one for me as I had severe case of bronchitis
going. I managed to croak through my Bible class and morning sermon. I
actually felt worse Sunday evening and Keith Bradley stepped up to the
plate to pinch hit for me. Well, it was not actually a baseball game, but
Keith did preach in my stead. He brought a great lesson from James 3:13-
18 on “Heavenly Wisdom Versus Demonic Wisdom.” Thanks, Keith, for
filling in for me when I felt like I had been hit over the head with a
baseball bat!
I HAD PLANNED TO CONCLUDE the series of sermons from the
Sermon on the Mount last Sunday evening. However, I’ll do it this Sunday
evening and begin a new series of sermons next Sunday evening on the “I
Am’s of Jesus.”
